1898年以前，梁啓超試圖將西方的價值偷運進中國。1898年至1912年，梁啓超從文化主義轉嚮瞭國傢主義。1912年至1929年，梁啓超把西方與中國的二分法轉換成瞭物質與精神的二分法，從一個改革者成為瞭一個保守主義者。
