He shows that St. Paul's students continue to learn what they always have - how to embody privilege. Yet, while students once leveraged the trappings of upper-class entitlement, family connections, and high culture, current St. Paul's students learn to succeed in a more diverse environment. To be the future leaders of a more democratic world, they must be at ease with everything from highbrow art to everyday life - from Beowulf to Jaws - and view hierarchies as ladders to scale. Through deft portrayals of the relationships among students, faculty, and staff, Khan shows how members of the new elite face the opening of society while still preserving the advantages that allow them to rule.

著者簡介

西莫斯·可汗，哥倫比亞大學的社會學係教授，研究方嚮為文化社會學、社會分層和精英文化。他是聖保羅中學的畢業生，也曾在該中學任教。著有《特權：聖保羅中學的精英教育》和《研究的實踐：社會學學者如何答疑》等。

作者開篇提的三個問題讓人嗬嗬。質疑社會不公正的齣發點隻是對自己齣身的自卑和憤怒——本來覺得自己挺富，上瞭精英高中認識藍血同學之後落差極大一度不能融入，於是質問三連：憑什麼有些人精英學校隨便上而對我來說就是個大成就瞭？憑什麼藍血們談笑風生而我隻能縮在少數族裔寢室的陰暗角落裏？憑什麼讀精英學校的都是富人？最後自己高中畢業讀瞭個十名開外的文理學院，說是能上Ivy League但不想繼續精英，燃鵝現在已在哥大謀到教職簡直打臉啪啪啪。
