威廉·福特·懷特美國芝加哥學派社會學傢，美國藝術和科學研究院院士。1914年生於馬薩諸塞州。1943年獲芝加哥大學哲學博士學位。自1942年其，曾先後在俄剋拉荷馬大學，芝加哥大學，康奈爾大學任教。1964年任美國應用人類學協會主席，1977至1978任美國社會學協會主席，並兼任多項職務。1982年曾來華講學。本書是他的成名之作，也是他最重要的一部著作。
