乾隆皇帝在1736年到1795年间统治着中国，他位居典礼活动构成的网络中心。这些帝国礼仪旨在通过身体实践，以有形的方式呈现支撑帝国社会的形而上学。本书是第一步完整论述乾隆皇帝和文人官员共同生产的"仪式化权力"的著作。作者打破传统范畴，巧妙地结合了人类学、后结构主义分析、表演理论、历史学和宗教学等领域的研究方法，通过一种批判性的文化史研究，阐释了18世纪中国的权力生产和现代史学家借以研究中国的概念范畴。
作者简介

研究作为“文本/表演”的仪式，18世纪的确是较为特殊的对象。而从内容上看，作者的理论建构与事实论述间有着比较明显的空隙，乃至偏移。总的来说，这是一部适合西方读者的作品；对于中国的读者，尤其是研究者而言，也只能做到有限的启发而已。作者的知识似乎过于聚焦于纸面上的清帝国，对整体的帝国历史缺乏深入认识。
评分理论建构＞案例的典型性
评分三星半。将礼作为一种话语，包含了“仪式化”这个组成部分，强调主体生产和由此流转的意义。部分视角蛮有启发，但整个的思路及要解决的相应问题还是有些拎不清。
评分关于古代中国，礼是非常值得研究的一个话题。作者搜集了许多文献，可能由于资料整合，以及作者想处理的问题太多，使文章显得有些碎片化，有些凌乱，但用心慢慢看还是有思路预设其中的。
评分整体思路还算清晰，也不是没有胡扯的时候。
