乾隆皇帝在1736年到1795年间统治着中国，他位居典礼活动构成的网络中心。这些帝国礼仪旨在通过身体实践，以有形的方式呈现支撑帝国社会的形而上学。本书是第一步完整论述乾隆皇帝和文人官员共同生产的"仪式化权力"的著作。作者打破传统范畴，巧妙地结合了人类学、后结构主义分析、表演理论、历史学和宗教学等领域的研究方法，通过一种批判性的文化史研究，阐释了18世纪中国的权力生产和现代史学家借以研究中国的概念范畴。
作者简介
司徒安，纽约大学人类学与宗教研究副教授。主要研究领域为人类学、中国文化史及宗教研究。拍摄纪录片《水书》（2012）。合编Body, Subject and Power in China, DV-Made China: Digital Subjects and Social Transformations after Independent Film。她的个人网页为www.angelazito.com。

研究作为“文本/表演”的仪式，18世纪的确是较为特殊的对象。而从内容上看，作者的理论建构与事实论述间有着比较明显的空隙，乃至偏移。总的来说，这是一部适合西方读者的作品；对于中国的读者，尤其是研究者而言，也只能做到有限的启发而已。作者的知识似乎过于聚焦于纸面上的清帝国，对整体的帝国历史缺乏深入认识。
评分偶然见到还有这么本书，真是极尽东扯葫芦西扯瓢之能事。。。
评分基础立论有点太文化批评和后殖民影子；某些理论堆砌无必要；面对的是层累的历史，有些人类学解读“倒果为因”看不到背后历史的复杂性；器物的解读有“结构"无“言说”。但本书正式明确从人类学角度切入礼仪和物质形态，这个方向很有潜力。
评分答应的书评至今还没写出来，汗颜。
评分尝试以人类学的角度来阐释礼，想法倒不错。俩问题值得讨论：礼知识的发现是随时间而变的；礼制有时是有需要再制定，不是一开始就有框架。新清史对本书的引述误解很多，不可尽信。
