What makes a story a story? What is style? What's the connection between realism and real life? These are some of the questions James Wood answers in "How Fiction Works," the first book-length essay by the preeminent critic of his generation. Ranging widely--from Homer to David Foster Wallace, from "What Maisie Knew "to "Make Way for Ducklings"--Wood takes the reader through the basic elements of the art, step by step. The result is nothing less than a philosophy of the novel--plainspoken, funny, blunt--in the traditions of E. M. Forster's "Aspects of the Novel "and Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style." It sums up two decades of insight with wit and concision. It will change the way you read.

If the book has a larger argument, it is that fiction is both artifice and verisimilitude, and that there is nothing difficult in holding together these two possibilities. Free indirect style is a...

James Wood

Very insightful little book on western Literature. I admire Wood's attitude towards criticisms. He does not bother to "canonize" novels like Bloom does, instead, he explores another way of getting close to the texts and digging out the most subtle issues concerning the production of Literature. It surpasses Forster's Aspects of Novels in many ways.

(贝克特:I do give a fuck about people!!!)

Short but simple and interesting. Fiction teaches people how to live, then life teaches us how to enjoy fiction. They are entangled with each other, beautifying human being itself perfectly.
