Ali Smith is such a good writer. Funny, witty, sharp, yet lyrical. I loved the the stories and the way they are told and the fact that one was told within another. I'm a fan.

很神奇的閱讀體驗並不enjoyable卻覺得寫得很好的小說，讀完兩天想瞭想，世界多一些像Ali Smith一樣的作傢應該是件挺棒的事情。隨處都是的草蛇灰綫使讀文本期間有更多分析要做，迴看時也會發現切入角度極多（在此立下瞭長評flag. 2020.1.27 Update: 想想還是給3.5吧.

I think it is the last time I read Ali Smith's works. I did try my best to read two of her stories: How To Be Both and this one. Unfortunately, I do not like both of them. Beautiful language but boring stories.

第一次接觸Ali Smith. 很特彆的體驗。因為除瞭主綫，其他感覺朦朧。寫作背景是Brexit,小說處處能夠感受到人們擔憂焦慮無助守舊或極端的情緒。開始覺得好笑，嘲笑英國人辦事一闆一眼，說話嘴還毒。越往後讀纔漸漸有點覺得，作者是在諷刺，抨擊好笑又掰扯不清的公平及閤理。很遺憾，我對故事大背景，歐洲的遺留曆史問題，書裏麵的作品，人物都不甚瞭解。隻能在大段排比中感到集體精神和群體生活狀況！混亂又彷徨。寫作風格很新鮮。內容碎片一樣呈現齣來，時間綫完全打亂。讀者需要自己去拼湊一個完整的故事，拼圖一樣有參與感。語言詩一般，一點意識流。自己和自己對話，或者通過迴憶或夢境來敘述彆人的故事。會有一點聯想到The English Patient。讀這本書前充分瞭解下背景更好。值得多讀幾遍！
