本書首版於1957年，它用簡短明快的文字概述瞭文學理論、文學史和文學批評方麵的關鍵術語。第十版包含瞭更多的新詞條，其中一些是有關最新的文學批評理論的；所有早期的詞條都進行瞭重新修訂，有的進行瞭重寫；各個獨立詞條中提到的相關作品也重新擴充瞭，把新近的作品包含瞭進來；在原有的“術語索引”基礎上新增瞭“人名索引”。這本文學詞典曆經廣大師生和專業研究人員的考驗，已經成瞭他們不可替代的必備工具書。
