西方史学开山之作，以波斯征服史为主线，希腊殖民史为副线，穿插神话传说、奇闻轶事，勾勒出一幅公元前五世纪东地中海到中西亚各民族的完整历史画卷。希罗多德天南海北恣意游走的叙事风格看似漫不经意，实则暗具匠心，可读性极强（除埃及部分），让我一个非专业读者爱不释手。有对风俗习惯的客观记录，也有抑残暴波斯扬自由雅典的春秋笔法。更要感谢这一版的编者，用详尽的史图和注解为普通读者铺平了通向古代世界的道路。

这本和Strassler的Thucydides、Xenophon，注解详尽，排版完美，地图丰富而标示细致，总之对于各种水平的读者诉求、兴趣、关注点都体贴入微，是最好的古希腊历史读本，没有之一！最接近的中国历史著作，大概是杨伯峻先生注的《左传》了（只可惜该版本缺乏地图、照片）。
