英文写作风格指南，Steven Pinker新作。前60%的内容不仅是风格指南，还从认知神经学的角度分析了写作风格好坏的心理机制；后40%的内容侧重于语法、词语和标点的约定俗成规则和运用。是本理性，有料，但也不乏格调和艺术的好书，举例诙谐令人发笑。
评分想必读此书的人都多少知道作者作为语言学家的大名，于是或许以为这书与过去的那些写作指南一样充斥着学究气息，作者的工作就是把学究气规规矩矩塞入固定的模式框架中：某某某得这样用，不能那样用……的确，例如我之前读过的《Grammatically Correct》便是这样的风格，想来大部分写作指导书亦应如此。然而，这本书好就好在跳脱了同类型书籍的死板，在一开始就指出过去那些写作书，包括是被大家公认为神书的《The Elements of Style》，都有很大的局限性，好比对语言的发展本质欠缺考虑，又好比立下一大批规则，使得人们在写作实践中只知道无脑遵循，毫无灵活性可言，实际上规则完全可以打破，只是需要足够的理由和强大的独立思考能力。作者正是要告诉我们，比任何写作指南都更为重要的是自主深入的思考过程。

评分由语言学家和认知心理学家写的（英文）style guide，感觉比较适合理性派思维的人阅读。并不是无端列举一大堆写作规则和建议，而是有组织地讲解行文、段落和句子的结构，最重要的是所有分析都有从语言、逻辑、心理学等方面的道理可循。特别是书前半部分感觉可以抽空再仔细读一下做一些笔记，后面部分关于一些具体用词、标点之类的就有点琐碎了。原本是为了改善自己的 academic writing skill 来读的，自己觉得收获不少，但是真正 improve 还是得需要多多练习写作吧。
