哲学阅读的一个基本困难在于，当我们在种种争论之中穿梭游弋时，其所得往往并非真理或洞见，而是陷入一种巨大的不确定性之中。即面对种种相反却均有一定道理的观点时，有一种茫然而无所措的感觉。普特南在《实在论的多幅面孔》中自称是一个小写r意义上的实在论者，但在一些人看来，却过于实用主义了。
