著者简介

V.S.奈保尔（V.S.Naipaul）：

英国著名作家。1932年生于特立尼达岛上一个印度移民家庭，1950年进入牛津大学攻读英国文学，毕业后迁居伦敦。

50年代开始写作，著有《米格尔街》、《斯通与骑士伙伴》、《自由国度》、《河湾》、“印度三部曲”、《非洲的假面剧》等。2001年，荣获诺贝尔文学奖。

我看短评里大家偏爱的前两个短篇时，心里只有WHAT THE ACTUAL FXXK 同名中篇才能说得上是有质感。个人生活经历大概是奈保尔创作的最重要源泉，他写特立尼达的小城故事，清甜的热带气息让人动容；写白人去南非寻找自由，能完美与人物共情；写印度人的苦难，让人觉得他歧视自己的种族。

有点失望。两个短篇还不错，主打的短长篇令人厌烦，通篇没话找话的大段景物描写，没看出起到什么必不可少的作用。其实整本书就是在讲cultural displacement，无论“从低向高”追求更好的生活，还是“从高到低”寻求自由，最终都事与愿违无所适从。
