晚明时期，品类繁多的“物”在中国文化中扮演了过去所不曾享有的重要角色，关于物的分类、使用、品评，以及对它们所感到的不安或褒贬，成为晚明士人关注的话题。
牛津大学教授柯律格的名著《长物》，以明代文震亨《长物志》一书为例，从物品视角切入艺术史，同时也跨越学科界限，参照社会文化理论，讨论明代的“多余之物”——绘画、书法、青铜器、瓷器、玉雕以及其他明代士绅精英所拥有的文玩用品，考察它们如何被鉴赏、使用，如何成为被消费的商品，以怎样的方式流通、被接受，以及它们在明代社会生活中的意涵，是一部有关晚明文化消费的经典著作。
作者简介
柯律格（Craig Clunas）1954年出生于英国苏格兰阿伯丁，现任英国牛津大学艺术史系讲座教授，曾任伦敦维多利亚与艾伯特博物馆（Victoria & Albert Museum）中国部资深研究员兼策展人15年，并自1994年起先后执教于萨塞克斯大学（University of Sussex）艺术史系及伦敦大学亚非学院（SOAS）。柯律格是当前从物质文化角度研究中国文明史的重要学者，自1991年起陆续出版《长物：早期现代中国的物质文化与社会状况》（Superfluous Things: Material Culture and Social Status in Early Modern China, 1991）、《丰饶之地：明代中国的园林文化》（Fruitful Sites: Garden Culture in Ming Dynasty China, 1996）、《早期现代中国的图画与视觉性》（Pictures and Visuality in Early Modern China, 1997）、《中国艺术》（Art in China, 1997）及《雅债：文徵明的社交性艺术》（Elegant Debts; the Social Art of Wen Zhengming, 1470-1559 , 2004）、《大明帝国：明代中国的视觉和物质文化》（Empire of Great Brightness: Visual and Material Cultures of Ming China, 1368-1644, 2007）等书。

评分后来看了别的汉学家的书 回来降一星翻译
评分论述方式有点捉不到重点，再加上不太流畅的翻译…其实就是布尔迪厄+一点鲍德里亚，如今读来也说不上有多么新鲜。结语延伸出去提到Burke和Bloch的地方倒是有点意思，虽说并没有觉得此前若干章的讨论引向了这样一段东西。
