著者簡介

詹姆斯•鮑德溫（1924—1987），美國著名小說傢、散文傢、詩人、劇作傢和社會活動傢，生於紐約哈萊姆區，童年坎坷，生父有毒癮問題，後母親嫁給牧師大衛·鮑德溫，又生育8個孩子。

1938年，受其嚴苛的繼父的影響，14歲的鮑德溫成為瞭哈萊姆地區的一名牧師。17歲時，鮑德溫決定脫離教會。19歲生日那天，其繼父去世，當天哈萊姆地區也發生瞭暴動。

1948年，對美國的種族現實極度失望的鮑德溫選擇移居法國。1953年，鮑德溫齣版瞭帶有很強的自傳色彩的處女作《嚮蒼天呼籲》。此後的三十年裏，他陸續齣版瞭《土生子劄記》《喬萬尼的房間》《另一個國度》《下一次將是烈火》《告訴我火車開走瞭多久》《如果比爾街會說話》等著名作品。

1957年，鮑德溫迴到美國，投入當時如火如荼的黑人解放運動。1987年12月1日，鮑德溫因肺癌在法國去世。他一生著有六部長篇小說、四部劇本、十幾部散文集、一本童書和一捲詩集。

2016年，哈烏·佩剋執導的、以鮑德溫為主人公的紀錄片《我不是你的黑鬼》獲得奧斯卡奬提名。《諾頓美國黑人文學選集》如是評價鮑德溫——“以優美的藝術性，通過將自己個人經曆中最隱秘的部分和國傢及世界命運中最廣泛的問題結閤起來，刺透瞭美國種族意識中的曆史性障礙。”

They are still trapped in a history which they don't understand, and until they understand they can't be relieved from it/testify to your inferiority這個說法(?/和BetweenTheWorld&Me極其相似但不認同的部分還是不認同-To act is to be committed,to be committed is to be in danger, in this case, the danger involved most white Americans is the loss of their identity.

全书6万字，对于没有接触过或者有轻微接触过鲍德温作品的人来说，都应该先读跋，王家湘先生在2017年发表的《论詹姆斯鲍德温级其作品》，占了全书的1/5吧。反正我是读完全书才意识到应该先读跋的。类似于我这样对鲍德温一无所知的读者，读起来应该都有些朦朦胧胧恍恍惚惚的不知...
