著者簡介

卡爾·休斯剋（Carl E. Schorske），生於紐約市，先後就讀於哥倫比亞學院和哈佛大學。他現為代頓—斯托剋頓曆史學教授，並一直擔任普林斯頓大學歐洲文化研究中心主任。休斯剋還曾在衛斯理大學和加州大學伯剋利校區擔任教職。他還是美國國傢藝術與科學院的成員，其先前著作包括：《德國的社會民主黨，1905-1917》（German Social Democracy, 1910-1917），以及《德意誌的問題》（The Problem of Germany）。

我自感沒有讀透這本書，原因是我對這段曆史的陌生，所以我也不敢評分。這本書的主題是探討現代主義，而作者則從十九世紀末的維也納取材。讀罷這本書後，隻感作者的探索範圍極廣。從開篇的建築，到中段的政治，及至末尾的藝術。這其實就是紮實的學問功力。這或許是我讀這本書後得到的最深啓發。這本書是列在一份史學書單上麵的... Fin-de-siecle在英語裏麵一般特指十九世紀末。它的含義非常微妙。十九世紀末既是歐陸的輝煌時期，也是衰敗前的日落。

曆史書寫的經緯綫（共時性與曆時性）：處理混淆多元化現實與同質化定義的問題。曆史和地理都不熟，讀起來費勁。看得最入迷的是以花園為綫索的那幾章。

其实还没有怎么看，德文的东西总是让人头大，何况还是从英文翻译过来的版本。大量稀奇古怪的直接从英语德语化的词，还有很多法语词。异常艰涩。不过就是感兴趣。弗洛伊德(Freud)是维也纳人，哈耶克Hayek也是，还有Gombrich也是，最近我在看的书的作者都是，虽然是不同时期。...
