宗教在社會中長期存在，除瞭社會生活層麵上的原因之外，社會心理學和文化人類學等學科的研究也已證明，宗教的存在還有其更深層的原因：這就是人類對“形而上”的追求本性，恩格斯在談到宗教信仰時指齣：“即便是最荒謬的迷信，其根基也是反映瞭人類本質的永恒本性。”這就告訴我們，人類存在著某種永恒的本性。對“形而上”的追求，就是人類的本性之一。
宗教之所以能和長期存在，還因為其本身所具有的一定的社會功能。具體來分析，宗教的社會功能可以分為宗教的文化功能、倫理功能與經濟功能。
