宗教在社会中长期存在，除了社会生活层面上的原因之外，社会心理学和文化人类学等学科的研究也已证明，宗教的存在还有其更深层的原因：这就是人类对“形而上”的追求本性，恩格斯在谈到宗教信仰时指出：“即便是最荒谬的迷信，其根基也是反映了人类本质的永恒本性。”这就告诉我们，人类存在着某种永恒的本性。对“形而上”的追求，就是人类的本性之一。
宗教之所以能和长期存在，还因为其本身所具有的一定的社会功能。具体来分析，宗教的社会功能可以分为宗教的文化功能、伦理功能与经济功能。
