《译文名著精选:嘉莉妹妹》讲述：嘉莉到芝加哥探亲，在火车上结识了推销员杜洛埃，她不堪工厂的艰苦生活，和杜洛埃同居，从而结识酒店经理赫斯渥。赫斯渥迷恋她的美色，竟盗用公款和她逃到纽约，过起同居生活。嘉莉因偶然的机会登台演出，渐渐获得成功，赫斯渥却逐步潦倒。两人分手，赫斯渥最后自杀。

还行。
评分文笔比较啰嗦笨拙，现实却足够打动人。后半部到纽约后，写得更细致，因而也更好。
评分前面和后面才看的进去，中间基本都快速略过，
评分在金钱和欲望面前，没什么真挚的感情。
评分嘉莉带着欢乐的想往融汇进在大城市追求享乐的人群热潮。久未找到工作的她先后依靠杜洛埃、赫斯渥在城市生存。直到跟后者私奔、境况没落，她才不得不重新寻找生存机会，天资聪颖运气好，她最后成名。但成名前抛弃赫斯渥和她的天真却形成了对比。至于赫斯渥，为了和嘉莉在一起，违反道德抛妻弃子又携款带着不知情的嘉莉潜逃，简直罪不可恕，可他却认为社会这么评判他不公道，因为人们只看到问题的一面，只看到漫长悲剧中的某一点，只看到他偷了钱，而对他为什么要偷就无动于衷，人们不了解他就定了他的罪。德莱塞的态度就隐含在这些对立中，他后来借人物之口说“凡是没有感受到生活的忧伤一面的人”不会感觉到文学人物/小说的悲伤，因而有人觉得嘉莉自私冷漠，有人觉得她天真善良，而赫斯渥可能无情冷酷，也可能真诚热烈。文学塑造的人物没有绝对的好与坏
