A small but witty piece. Maugham understands women, the implausibility of loving but not being hurt, and finally the illusion of love.

毛姆少數（唯一？）的一部“先有故事再有人物”。語言流暢故事麯摺所以幾乎是一口氣讀完的（幾乎不記得電影瞭，除瞭諾頓&BE外……然後發現其實原著的結尾相當+ve）藉不同人物之口道齣自己對人生的各種看法；第一次知道毛姆對道傢也有研究……Kitty從一個沒什麼腦子的浮華虛榮jolly beauty成長為有主見的獨立女性的過程也是很生動感人……讀完後感覺對folks更寬容瞭。。

不是不懂愛之毫無緣由，隻是耿耿於懷為什麼蓋茨比會愛黛西，就像沃特會愛Kitty。Guess Maugham would rather be a gay when he realized that good men always fall in love with those silly and frivolous and empty-headed women ( no!

在薄荷閱讀上讀完瞭The Painted Veil 的英文版，麵紗算是我接觸比較早的毛姆老師作品瞭，帶著他特有的喪感，人物慘到底，但結尾還是覺醒瞭一點希望。比起月亮與六便士和人生的枷鎖，應該還不算太毛姆。

如果说旅行对于写作者来说，是一次难得的机遇，那么这个机遇对于当时的毛姆来说，真的是一次修心之旅。是旅行让他见识了这个世界不同国家的地方，也让他找到了不同的灵感，写下了许多优秀作品。 在毛姆所在的年代，不论是当时的英国还是法国亦或者远在大洋彼岸的中国，都是混乱...
