著者简介

约翰·威廉斯（John Edward Williams, 1922—1994），美国作家，诗人，学者。辍过学，当过电台播音，从过军。退役后入大学就读并获博士学位。

于1945年-1985年间在母校丹佛大学任教，教授大学英语及创意写作。曾编辑出版学术文集《文艺复兴时期的英语诗歌》，也创作过两本诗集。

一生只写了四部小说：《惟有黑夜》（1948）、《屠夫十字镇》（1960）、《斯通纳》（1965）、《奥古斯都》（1973，本书当年获得美国国家图书奖）。

对约翰·威廉斯的写作，英国作家朱利安·巴恩斯评论：“当我称之为‘绝佳’，我的意思是它们（《屠夫十字镇》《斯通纳》）已经超越了各自类型范围内的评价标准。”

之前抱怨这书的语言太平庸连出轨戏都干瘪无趣，今晚读完最后几十页竟然哭了。多数人的一生都是这般乏善可陈，Stoner已算幸运的。当有一天我们也在生命尽头回顾自己平淡的一生，想起一些对个人而言尚算可爱的瞬间，会不会也像Stoner那样不停自问“what do you expect?"

Stoner's plain life manifests the truth of the way of life, at least a life that most of us share: we dream and have expectations, then we constantly make mistakes, and we reconcile with these misfortunes and disappointments. This is the most glorious but miserable fact--life simply goes on. Profundity lies in the mundane and the mediocre.

英文有声书。文笔真是不错，读的也好。看大家都在说Stoner的一生到底是不是失败的，我觉得从普通的价值观来讲，肯定是；但是如果这是一个人自己的选择，而不是被迫接受，那就不算是失败。一个人过了自己想过的一生，不是挺好。
