本書由彩色版《中華帝國圖景》以及附錄兩部分組成。

阿羅姆沒有到過中國，他是以威廉•亞曆山大等人的畫作為藍本，創作瞭128張西方早期藝術史上最經典的中國影像。再配以懷特的說明文字，齣版不久便成為英國乃至西方最早、最著名的繪畫本中國曆史教科書。當時的歐洲人，尤其是歐洲上層社會關於中國的知識大部分都源自這本書。

編者收集到瞭124張手工上色的阿羅姆版畫，數量之多在國內尚屬首次。

附錄部分收集瞭1682—1880年間歐洲齣版的38 張中國主題彩色版畫。

托馬斯•阿羅姆（Thomas Allom，1804—1872年）：英國頂尖設計師、插圖畫傢、英國皇傢建築師協會創辦人之一。1804年齣生於倫敦南部的蘭貝斯，父親是一名馬車夫。1819年起，在建築師古德溫的事務所做學徒。1826年進入英國皇傢美術學院學習建築設計。先後主持修建瞭聖彼得教堂、海伯利教堂、肯星頓公園，參與設計瞭英國議會大廈，籌辦創建瞭英國皇傢建築師協會。自19世紀20年代起，廣泛遊覽世界各地，創作瞭眾多具有濃鬱地域風情的水彩畫，齣版瞭《君士坦丁堡和小亞細亞七座亞洲教堂的風光》（1838年）、《中華帝國圖景》（1843年）等多部著作。

喬治•N. 懷特（George N. Wright，約1794—1877年）：英國作傢、聖公會牧師。約1794年齣生於都柏林，父親是一名醫生。大學就讀於都柏林聖三一學院。畢業後先是在愛爾蘭任助理牧師，後來前往倫敦，長期從事傳教與教育事業。19世紀20年代至40年代，他主持編寫瞭眾多供學生閱讀的書籍。此外，他還編寫瞭一批風俗畫冊，如《都柏林曆史指南》（1825年）、《圖說愛爾蘭》（1831年），以及《中華帝國圖景》（1843年）等書。

趙省偉：廈門大學曆史係畢業，目前專注於中國曆史影像的收藏和齣版，藏有海量中國主題的法國、德國報紙和書籍。編有《遺失在西方的中國史》《西洋鏡》係列叢書。
