本书由彩色版《中华帝国图景》以及附录两部分组成。

阿罗姆没有到过中国，他是以威廉•亚历山大等人的画作为蓝本，创作了128张西方早期艺术史上最经典的中国影像。再配以怀特的说明文字，出版不久便成为英国乃至西方最早、最著名的绘画本中国历史教科书。当时的欧洲人，尤其是欧洲上层社会关于中国的知识大部分都源自这本书。

编者收集到了124张手工上色的阿罗姆版画，数量之多在国内尚属首次。

附录部分收集了1682—1880年间欧洲出版的38 张中国主题彩色版画。

托马斯•阿罗姆（Thomas Allom，1804—1872年）：英国顶尖设计师、插图画家、英国皇家建筑师协会创办人之一。1804年出生于伦敦南部的兰贝斯，父亲是一名马车夫。1819年起，在建筑师古德温的事务所做学徒。1826年进入英国皇家美术学院学习建筑设计。先后主持修建了圣彼得教堂、海伯利教堂、肯星顿公园，参与设计了英国议会大厦，筹办创建了英国皇家建筑师协会。自19世纪20年代起，广泛游览世界各地，创作了众多具有浓郁地域风情的水彩画，出版了《君士坦丁堡和小亚细亚七座亚洲教堂的风光》（1838年）、《中华帝国图景》（1843年）等多部著作。

乔治•N. 怀特（George N. Wright，约1794—1877年）：英国作家、圣公会牧师。约1794年出生于都柏林，父亲是一名医生。大学就读于都柏林圣三一学院。毕业后先是在爱尔兰任助理牧师，后来前往伦敦，长期从事传教与教育事业。19世纪20年代至40年代，他主持编写了众多供学生阅读的书籍。此外，他还编写了一批风俗画册，如《都柏林历史指南》（1825年）、《图说爱尔兰》（1831年），以及《中华帝国图景》（1843年）等书。

赵省伟：厦门大学历史系毕业，目前专注于中国历史影像的收藏和出版，藏有海量中国主题的法国、德国报纸和书籍。编有《遗失在西方的中国史》《西洋镜》系列丛书。
