Set in the bleak Fen Country of East Anglia, and spanning some 240 years in the lives of its haunted narrator and his ancestors, Waterland is a book that takes in eels and incest, ale-making and madness, the heartless sweep of history and a family romance as tormented as any in Greek tragedy.
" Waterland , like the Hardy novels, carries with all else a profound knowledge of a people, a place, and their interweaving.... Swift tells his tale with wonderful contemporary verve and verbal felicity.... A fine and original work."-- Los Angeles Times
Graham Swift is the author of eight novels, including Waterland, which won the Guardian Fiction Award, Last Orders, winner of the 1996 Booker Prize and 1998 IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, subsequently made into a successful film, Light of Day and Tomorrow. His new book, and first work of non-fiction, Making an Elephant: Writing from Within, is an open-spirited account of a writer's life and published in March 2009.
It's all about history— How it repeats itself, how it goes back on itself, no matter how we try to straighten it out. How it twists and turns. How it goes in circles and brings us back to the same place.
评分太震撼了,看这本书看到做梦都能梦见书里的人物和情节……"This novel taught me everything I know about the nature of history and what the point of studying history is, as well as the nature of revolution and how it always leads to trouble."
French Revolution.
