Graham Swift is the author of eight novels, including Waterland, which won the Guardian Fiction Award, Last Orders, winner of the 1996 Booker Prize and 1998 IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, subsequently made into a successful film, Light of Day and Tomorrow. His new book, and first work of non-fiction, Making an Elephant: Writing from Within, is an open-spirited account of a writer's life and published in March 2009.

整部作品解构了宏大叙事，质疑历史的真实性和客观性，叙述者通过讲述个人故事和家族故事开启了一场回忆之旅，追溯自己以及妻子如今生活状况的原因，结果还是以失败告终……在新历史主义者看来，历史并非线性和进步性的，也不是客观化的。坐着通过叙述者之口表达了自己的历史观，即历史是故事，历史是循环的。作品的叙述手法和观点都很有启发意义。
