著者簡介

莫裏斯·剋萊因（Morris Kline, 1908-1992），紐約大學庫朗數學研究所的教授，榮譽退休教授，他曾在那裏主持一個電磁研究部門達20年之久。剋萊因的著作很多，包括《數學：確定性的喪失》和《數學與知識的探求》等。

书写的不错，翻译的还行。比较详细，对数学的发展以及各个分支的演变介绍的很好。不过如果对数学兴趣不大，或者没有坚持下去的毅力，看完是有难度的。

先简单地发一下牢骚。为什么克莱因不介绍中国的数学史呢？虽然作者说这是因为中国的数学发展对西方主流数学的发展没有影响。可是作者连印度数学都介绍了啊！印度数学除了阿拉伯数字以外对西方数学还有什么贡献啊？ 还有作者很是瞧不起阿拉伯人，认为他们在数学史上没有做出什么...

在这本书之前我也没看过别的数学史书，所以也不好比较其他书来评价。不过总的说来，作者把西方数学史写得脉络清晰，也非常吸引人。整套书的中文版被出版社分成4册，其中只有第一册和第二册的微积分部分算是科普级别的，从微分方程开始，想把书读透彻就多少需要高等数学的知识了...
