他是小說傢。1966年發錶《美麗失敗者》，書評傢盛贊：“喬伊斯還在人間，他以科恩之名在濛特利爾生活，他以亨利•米勒的角度書寫。”
他是歌手、詞麯創作者。他寫的歌被各界歌手翻唱，至今已有300張以上的音樂專輯收錄，僅以翻唱《哈裏路亞》一麯的專輯為例，銷量已超過500萬張。
萊昂納德•科恩至今齣版9本詩集、2本小說、17張音樂專輯。他的作品，在世即為經典。
科恩自70年代開始修禪。1994年起，隱居在禿山，1996年剃度齣傢成為禪宗和尚，法號“自閑”。1999年還俗下山。
2008年初夏，74歲的科恩重迴舞颱，在歐洲巡迴演唱，偶爾低吟他的詩句。他說：“我上次在這裏，是14年前，那時我60歲，隻是個懷抱瘋狂夢想的孩子。”2009年開始，他流浪的腳步將踏上全世界。
