老牧師臨終留給幼子的傢書，追憶南北戰爭時的傢族往事，追問宗教與人生的意義，亦有對當下人世化不開的眷戀，筆調平和深情。隻是宗教議論部分礙於理解，不太引人入勝。讀到做牧師的祖父身披血衣上戰場，想起禪宗的激烈響亮。若美國人來讀，應該會領略更深吧。
