Did gender inequalities exist only in traditional Chinese society but no longer in industrialized, modernized and urbanized Hong Kong? Have women really achieved equality with men in every aspect of their lives? Is gender simply about women and men? Whatis the relevance and significance of gender to understanding our society?

These are some of the questions that Gendering Hong Kong will address. The collection aims to introduce students to the richness of gender studies that have emerged in Hong Kong in the past few decades, both as a system of knowledge and a form of practice. In particular it will show how gender studies have helped us re-examine the nature and meanings of colonial politics; reveal the pervasiveness of gender inequalities in social institutions and processes; illuminate the multiple forms of power and inequalities; and transgress rigid and man-made boundaries.
