This novel is about a woman who lived in Nagasaki after the bomb was dropped. We don't hear the explosion. We don't even hear the names of the dead. And yet it's very clear that something perfectly wretched has gone on. Is still going on. Roe Kendall dramatizes so well that, after a while, I forgot to wonder why an English woman of breeding would be telling the story. 石黑一雄（Kazuo Ishiguro），日裔英國小說傢，1954年生於日本長崎。1989年獲得“布剋奬”，與奈保爾、拉什迪並稱“英國文壇移民三雄”。被英國皇室授勛為文學騎士，並獲授法國藝術文學騎士勛章。
1989年，石黑一雄獲得享有盛譽的“布剋奬”。石黑一雄文體以細膩優美著稱，幾乎每部小說都被提名或得奬，其作品已被翻譯成二十八種語言。
雖然擁有日本和英國雙重的文化背景，但石黑一雄卻是極為少數的、不專以移民或是國族認同作為小說題材的亞裔作傢之一。他緻力於寫齣一本對於生活在任何一個文化背景之下的人們，都能夠産生意義的小說。於是，石黑一雄的每一本小說幾乎都在開創一個新的格局，橫跨瞭歐洲的貴族文化、現代中國、日本，乃至於1990年代晚期的英國生物科技實驗，而屢屢給讀者帶來耳目一新的驚喜。

评分每次讀Ishiguro的英文，都像在讀日語（如果我能讀懂日語的話），日本作傢的個人特徵太明顯瞭，細膩，優美，淡然，有時候氣氛帶點靈異之感。
评分a bit creepy especially when you realize that sachiko might just be etsuko herself or there indeed exist such a person but they do share the same experience. i am a bit puzzled. Kazuo Ishiguro was 5 when he moved to Britain. How can he describe these Japanese things so precise like he's been growing up there. this is definitely not a british novel
