John Carreyrou is a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter at The Wall Street Journal. For his extensive coverage of Theranos, Carreyrou was awarded the George Polk Award for Financial Reporting, the Gerald Loeb Award for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism in the category of beat reporting, and the Barlett & Steele Silver Award for Investigative Business Journalism. Carreyrou lives in Brooklyn with his wife and three children.

一個令人抑鬱的故事。本書最大的問題是它在前半部試圖以上帝視角來講述這個故事，但Carreyron並沒有足夠的信息來做這個上帝。因此前半部給我最大的感覺就是我産生的疑問全都得不到解答，在Carreyron開始用第一人稱講述這個故事之後就好瞭很多（我懷疑前半部是不是為瞭增加書的厚度，編輯要求他後來加上的）。Carreyron把Theranos多年成功的最大原因歸結於Holmes的個人魅力。我不買這個帳。這也是我最大的疑問。Carreyron沒能給我一個迴答，很可惜也沒辦法知道更多。在我粗淺的理解中，Holmes曇花一現的“成功”充分展示瞭所謂elitists，或者說“上層階級”的盲從與愚蠢。恐怕也正是這種愚蠢和其産生的嚴重後果纔造成瞭今天世界的割裂和populism explosion。三星半。
评分2018年快讀完畢，沒讀的人不必讀瞭。大錶姐的電影會來瞭。簡單說，就是不創新的科技騙子+一幫惡棍律師事務所，竟然能夠在美國將這個騙局掩蓋瞭這麼多年。George總統的孫子去做實習生發現瞭大問題，保持自己的良心，竟然還能被惡棍律師惡意閉嘴。簡直就牛上天瞭！2018年11月正好是，基因編輯兒童在中國被廣泛討論，看來所謂的“科技狂人”由商業和資本的刺激之下，以後還是會層齣不窮的。
评分其實不僅是矽榖，全世界很多初創企業都遵循著fake-it-until-you-make-it模式，隻要不越過紅綫，投資者還是很寬容的。
评分類似政治驚悚劇，寫得非常精彩，作者開始調查後的幾章節奏尤其好。主要聚焦於Theranos對內的混亂管理以及對外的謊言和bully。可惜作者沒有進一步采訪那些被忽悠的和沒有被忽悠的VC或者董事會成員，因此也難以真正理解創始人的魅力和缺陷在哪裏。本書遺留的問題挺多：初創公司如何平衡科研和商業化，生命科學的熱潮究竟有多可靠，如何界定商業秘密和NDA的範圍，違法行為本身是否可以受到商業機密法律的保護（個人感到在中國是不受保護的）。希望可以看到更多法律分析（但大概沒什麼人願意看）。總的想法是，盡職調查真的很重要！
