这本书的名称据称是源自英国诗人约翰·多恩（John Donne）在“ Devotions upon Emergent Occasions”中的散文，源于奥哈拉与著名的纽约诗人学派其他成员之间的玩笑，受印象派和抽象派影响，其大部分的诗详细描述了纽约和日常的生活。
作者简介
弗兰克·奥哈拉（FrankO'Hara，1926-1966）是二战中成长起来的一位美国诗人，早年在哈佛大学读书，1951年定居纽约，在纽约现代艺术博物馆工作并在生前做到了馆长（他和作为保险公司副总裁的史蒂文斯一起，无疑打破了我们关于诗人与经济性事务之间关系的刻板印象），由此结实了当时的一批画家，跟第二代抽象表现主义画家集团联系密切。1966年他年仅四十岁因车祸——一种现代的、完全非诗性的方式去世。
然而奥哈拉达到了他那个时代把非诗性的材料引入诗歌写作的巅峰，在文学史上他扩充了一个当时还算模糊但在他之后大行其道的传统：occasional poem（应景诗）。他的语调是即兴性的，也正是这种即兴性和对日常生活的快速记录，他在某种程度上确立了自己诗歌的独特地位。他的许多诗歌都是对日常生活的抓拍，像是绘画的草图，海伦•文德勒尝试把它命名为“口语电影诗”。
