Few discussions in modern social science have occupied as much attention as the changing nature of welfare states in Western societies. Gosta Esping-Andersen, one of the foremost contributors to current debates on this issue, here provides a new analysis of the character and role of welfare states in the functioning of contemporary advanced Western societies. Esping-Andersen distinguishes three major types of welfare state, connecting these with variations in the historical development of different Western countries. He argues that current economic processes, such as those moving toward a postindustrial order, are shaped not by autonomous market forces but by the nature of states and state differences. Fully informed by comparative materials, this book will have great appeal to all those working on issues of economic development and postindustrialism. 作者简介
Gøsta Esping-Andersen (born 24 November 1947, Næstved, Denmark) is a Danish sociologist whose primary focus is on the welfare state and its place in capitalist economies. Esping-Andersen is a professor at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona (Spain), and member of the Scientific Committee of the Juan March Institute and of the Board of Trustees and the Scientific Council at the IMDEA Social Sciences Institute, both in Madrid (Spain).

评分正如作者所说，这本书的目的并不是预测福利国家的未来，而是通过对三种不同的福利国家类型的分析，来帮助大家理解当今（80年代-90年代）福利国家的不同的发展轨迹。作者通过“非商品化”“社会阶层”“养老金体制”“权力结构”等等多个方面，很清晰地为我们划分出了三个截然不同，而又相互影响的福利国家类型。英文原版书专业词汇太多，对于我这个英语不好的人来说，看它确实要下很大的功夫，但却获益颇多。这本书应该主要面向经济学专业的人，政治学专业的人看这本书，很多经济学的公式和算法比较复杂，比如说我，看数字就头疼，也就更加坚定了我放弃本科的经济学，转身政治学的信念了。。。
