The action takes place in late August 1833 at a hedge-school in the townland of Baile Beag, an Irish-speaking community in County Donegal. In a nearby field camps a recently arrived detachment of the Royal Engineers, making the first Ordnance Survey. 看到一個說法很妙：這是愛爾蘭版語言壁壘的羅硃。可以看得齣愛爾蘭一貫的民族主義在北愛動蕩的30年紛爭下迴歸殖民地語境再度探討語言和文化的關係更有政治苦痛的意味。語言的奴役是最強大的奴役，思想徵服意在抹殺所有鮮明的民族特性。但是劇中黑白曖昧的人物關係也在提醒著人們跳齣沒完沒瞭的二元對立思維。friel不是愛爾蘭契訶夫倒像是愛爾蘭易蔔生。He tried his best. 但是to remember everything is a form of madness 真的不是一種阿Q式的心酸掩飾嗎?
