E. H. Gombrich's Little History of the World, though written in 1935, has become one of the treasures of historical writing since its first publication in English in 2005. The Yale edition alone has now sold over half a million copies, and the book is available worldwide in almost thirty languages. Gombrich was of course the best-known art historian of his time, and his text suggests illustrations on every page. This illustrated edition of the Little History brings together the pellucid humanity of his narrative with the images that may well have been in his mind's eye as he wrote the book. The two hundred illustrations-most of them in full color-are not simple embellishments, though they are beautiful. Gombrich的这本书是大儒写的小历史，本意是写给小朋友看的，所以文字简洁生动有趣。串讲人类历史，娓娓道来，妙趣横生。作者高深的文字功底和渊博的知识体系使得这本书看似effortlessly written，流畅自然。真正的高屋建瓴，高山仰止。历史光怪陆离，诡谲多变，但是总体来说，the history of the world is, sadly, not a pretty poem. It offers little variety, and it is nearly always the unpleasant things that are repeated, over and over again. 人类要铭记历史，吸取教训，避免在魔咒的怪圈中无法自拔。

评分我的历史入门，读起来非常有史诗感，但是只能算是历史上，尤其是欧洲史比较重大事件的讲述，帮助认清了很多欧洲的人名，如果能配上地图或者相应时间就更好了。不过没想到贡布里希对中国的认识也就是欧美普通学过历史的高中生水平，竟然把秦始皇叫做"Enemy of History" 以最后一章的一句话结尾，One can be attached to one's own country without needing to insist that the rest of the world's inhabitants are worthless.
