E. H. Gombrich's Little History of the World, though written in 1935, has become one of the treasures of historical writing since its first publication in English in 2005. The Yale edition alone has now sold over half a million copies, and the book is available worldwide in almost thirty languages. Gombrich was of course the best-known art historian of his time, and his text suggests illustrations on every page. This illustrated edition of the Little History brings together the pellucid humanity of his narrative with the images that may well have been in his mind's eye as he wrote the book. The two hundred illustrations-most of them in full color-are not simple embellishments, though they are beautiful. They emerge from the text, enrich the author's intention, and deepen the pleasure of reading this remarkable work. 每一个孩子读这本书都会觉得在和一个学识渊博、内心充满宽容仁爱的友善叔叔/爷爷聊天吧。帮助读者建立一个框架，读者未来摄取的知识都可以像拼图一样放进这个框架里。还是欧洲史为主，毕竟作者是欧洲人。本来是写给孩子看的，语言是对话体的，成人看稍显幼稚，但内容还是很好的，能够体会到作者尽自己的全力尽量公正地去呈现历史，也提醒读者这种呈现永远不可能是准确的。前面有一个作者孙子写的序言，讲述了这本书创作的隽永故事。这是贡布里希唯一一本用德语写的书，而他人生的最后就是在自己修订翻译这部作品，可惜没有完成就去世了，最终这本书从德语到英语的翻译是他的助手完成的。
