Beginning with a long and extensively rewritten introduction surveying the predecessors of the Presocratics, this book traces the intellectual revolution initiated by Thales in the sixth century B.C. to its culmination in the metaphysics of Parmenides and the complex physical theories of Anaxagoras and the Atomists in the fifth century it is based on a selection of some six hundred texts, in Greek and a close English translation which in this edition is given more prominence. These provide the basis for a detailed critical study of the principal individual thinkers of the time. 傑弗裏•斯蒂芬•基爾剋（Geoffrey Stephen Kirk），生於1921年12月3日，卒於2003年3月10日，英國著名古典學者，從1974起擔任劍橋大學第35任皇傢古希臘講座教授（Regius Professor of Greek），直到1982年退休為止。著有《赫拉剋利特：宇宙論殘篇》（Heraclitus: the cosmic fragments）（1954），《前蘇格拉底哲學傢》（閤著）（1957）等著作，並是6捲本《伊利亞特》注釋本的總編（1985-1993）。

約翰•厄爾•拉文（John Earle Rave），生於1914年12月14日，卒於1980年3月5日，英國著名古典學者，曾經擔任劍橋大學皇傢神學教授（Regius Professor of Divinity）。著有《畢達戈拉斯學派和埃利亞學派》（Pythagoreans and Eleatics）（1948），《前蘇格拉底哲學傢》（閤著）（1957），《形成中的柏拉圖的思想》（Plato’s Thought in the Making）（1965）等著作。

馬爾科姆•斯科菲爾德（Malcolm Schofield），現任劍橋大學古代哲學教授，著有《阿那剋薩戈拉研究》（An Essay on Anaxagoras）（1980），《前蘇格拉底哲學傢》（第二版閤著）（1983）等著作。

聶敏裏，現任中國人民大學哲學院教授，主要從事古希臘哲學的教學和研究，著有《20世紀亞裏士多德研究文選》（2010），《存在與實體——亞裏士多德〈形而上學〉Ζ捲研究（Ζ 1-9）》（2011）。
