William Somerset Maugham was born in 1874 and lived in Paris until he was ten. He was educated at Kings School, Canterbury, and at Heidelberg University. He spent some time at St. Thomas Hospital with the idea of practising medicine, but the success of his first novel, Liza of Lambeth, published in 1897, won him over to literature. Of Human Bondage, the first of his masterpieces, came out in 1915, and with the publication in 1919 of The Moon and Sixpence his reputation as a novelist was established. At the same time his fame as a successful playwright and writer was being consolidated with acclaimed productions of various plays and the publication of several short story collections. His other works include travel books, essays, criticism and the autobiographical The Summing Up and A Writers Notebook.
In 1927 Somerset Maugham settled in the South of France and lived there until his death in 1965

Of Human Bondage is the first and most autobiographical of Maugham’s masterpieces. It is the story of Philip Carey, an orphan eager for life, love and adventure. After a few months studying in Heidelberg, and a brief spell in Paris as would-be artist, Philip settles in London to train as a doctor. And that is where he meets Mildred, the loud but irresistible waitress with whom he plunges into a formative, tortured and masochistic affair which very nearly ruins him.

沒經曆過焦灼和痛苦的就永遠還是少年人，少年人生活在彆處，少年人不懂此在的美，少年人便是最積極的存在主義。毛姆的小說看穿瞭存在的迷霧，孤獨但是並不惡心，參悟瞭選擇的荒謬卻依舊相信人生的自由。但是結尾呢，少年人的心還是不能明白孤獨和平凡到底哪一個纔是沉淪？【讀瞭700多頁的原著之後，毛姆終於比肩茨威格和陀氏，躋身我的外國作傢top3瞭╮(╯▽╰)╭
评分主要是孤獨吧，因此可以理解 Philip 與 Mildred 之間的情感糾葛。以前讀譯本時還奇怪P為什麼選擇瞭結婚，現在在讀瞭一串毛姆的小說後我覺得毛姆還是有那麼幾年嚮往婚姻、渴望被愛、遠離孤獨。所以他把結局收成瞭結婚，也算他瞭結瞭他的念想吧。另外毛姆後來棄醫從文，因此P從醫後的故事他也不能寫、不好寫瞭，點到為止即可。P或毛姆真的是很孤獨，全書的高頻單詞就是 Solitary.
评分沒有找到中國畫報齣版社的發行版，此封麵與之最為相近。 缺陷的存在，可以督促時刻保持自省能力。 一個gentlman三十歲的人生之後，並非從從容容但也初具規模瞭。
