Somewhere in South America, at the home of the country's vice president, a lavish birthday party is being held in honor of the powerful businessman Mr. Hosokawa. Roxanne Coss, opera's most revered soprano, has mesmerized the international guests with her singing. It is a perfect evening -- until a band of gunwielding terrorists takes the entire party hostage. But what begins as a panicked, life-threatening scenario slowly evolves into something quite different, a moment of great beauty, as terrorists and hostages forge unexpected bonds and people from different continents become compatriots, intimate friends, and lovers. </p>

還是被Patchett 的寫作徵服。她筆下的人物總能讓人很自然地感受和理解他們的內在，不管他們所處的環境和遭遇是否與讀者相去甚遠。我個人還是更喜歡她的Commonwealth 和the Dutch House，可能是因為Bel Canto is a tiny bit too romantic for me. 但我喜歡這個暢想，也無比贊同藝術對人類重要性再怎麼歌頌也不嫌過的，尤其是在越來越重視科技、發展智能等等這些關鍵詞的時代。

评分Brilliant. An ode to opera and music, operatic tone/pacing, omniscient narrator giving live to a cast of vivid characters: the love-confessing russian, the housekeeping VP, the priest. Time passes & relationships forms imperceptibly. Like the prisoners I also didn't want captivity to end. Epilogue (singer marries translator) a bit abrupt.
