High school and the difficult terrain of sexuality and gender identity are brilliantly explored in this smart, incisive ethnography. Based on eighteen months of fieldwork in a racially diverse working-class high school, "Dude, You're a Fag" sheds new light on masculinity both as a field of meaning and as a set of social practices. C. J. Pascoe's unorthodox approach analyzes masculinity as not only a gendered process but also a sexual one. She demonstrates how the 'specter of the fag' becomes a disciplinary mechanism for regulating heterosexual as well as homosexual boys and how the 'fag discourse' is as much tied to gender as it is to sexuality.

大概是目前为止这门课上读到的最喜欢的一本书了吧。虽然不是最深刻或者最学术的，但回答了很多我关于日常生活中一些情景的疑问，比如直男间无聊的玩笑/互亏，美国人对cool和popular的通常定义等等。其实最最震惊的还是这项研究是在加州做的，毕竟在伯克利呆久了，总觉得整个州都是自由左翼的天下，太难想象某个角落里还有这样保守的高中和偏见的人群。还好没去美国上高中，不然肯定要被这群蠢货气死
