B.威廉姆斯（1929-2003），二十世纪英国著名哲学家。曾先后任教于剑桥大学哲学系和美国加州大学伯克利分校。他以其在伦理学、古典学、知识论以及对于哲学一般问题的系统反思而著名。代表作有《个人问题》《道德运气》《伦理学与哲学的限度》《羞耻与必然性》《真与真实》《泰初有为》等。

陈嘉映，首都师范大学教授，长期从事哲学研究与翻译工作。他从十年前就可以带领学生阅读和翻译本书，以及威廉斯的其他著作。

在高中毕业以前就想清楚了“该如何生活”且时至今日一直如此生活着，并对“老百姓该如何生活”毫无兴趣的人表示，跟Williams的问题域毫无交集。又，现实道德经验的丰富性和复杂性是坐坐armchair读读几本哲学书，翻翻Aristotle,Kant就能conceive到的吗？Iphone6都快出来了为何小清新们还孜孜不倦相信苏老大的话，就像信孔老二的箴言一样？哪位实验哲学大侠来搞个调查，没读过哲学书的成年人跟读过一本/五本/十本/二十本伦理学名著的小清新们的道德直觉有何差别，这种差别又在何种程度上影响了各自的生活方式，道德实践,etc.

一种基于个人反思的概念思辨写作法，然而，我不认为思辨是做伦理学的合适的方法，概念里打转也能很有趣，但我们需要做更多的事情，帮助我们去理解世界（见Nagel的Mortal Questions序言），而不是理解/区分各种内涵精致的概念

伦理学长久以来所追求的超越性（无论是utilitarian还是Kantian）可能会导致苛求且忽视了个体特殊的善良愿望。这种超越性本身缺乏自我支持，在外部看来其价值是存疑的。诸种对道德事实的认知并不一定会converge。最要紧的confidence只写了寥寥几笔，能复活过来展开讲讲吗？（伦理学和形而上学竟能够以这种方式相遇，没看完后记忍不住来表达下reverence
