在时代的洪流中，命运看似不由自己掌控，但是作者没有放任自流。作为文革的牺牲品，本该上学的他被下放到内蒙古戈壁滩当农夫，但最终抓住改革开放、中美关系改善的契机出国深造，实现了自我价值。他的经历强有力地验证了两个朴素的道理——教育改变命运，机会只青睐有准备的人。在这个年纪读到这本书，感觉再折腾也不算晚。
评分读完了老单的前40年，一本流水账。这是一条多么漫长、曲折、湍急的流水啊。想想踏足其中，也让人多少胆寒。老单是一个聪明绝顶的斗士（想想一个把每人都变成斗士的时代也挺操蛋的），是任何时代都少之又少的精英层。不过在书最后一页，老单试图说，在这条激流里跋涉、一步走错，他也可能就是因为恋爱而入狱，并再找不到出戈壁之路的兵团战友“二狗”。
评分Fascinating life journey from 1954 to early 1990s. 有时现实比故事更夸张 佩服作者的耐性敢想敢做。知识可以改变命运 但也抵不过造化弄人。
