Composed at the rosy-fingered dawn of world literature almost three millennia ago, The Odyssey is a poem about violence and the aftermath of war; about wealth, poverty, and power; about marriage and family; about travelers, hospitality, and the yearning for home.
This fresh, authoritative translation captures the beauty of this ancient poem as well as the drama of its narrative. Its characters are unforgettable, none more so than the "complicated" hero himself, a man of many disguises, many tricks, and many moods, who emerges in this version as a more fully rounded human being than ever before.
Written in iambic pentameter verse and a vivid, contemporary idiom, Emily Wilson's Odyssey sings with a voice that echoes Homer's music; matching the number of lines in the Greek original, the poem sails along at Homer's swift, smooth pace.
A fascinating, informative introduction explores the Bronze Age milieu that produced the epic, the poem's major themes, the controversies about its origins, and the unparalleled scope of its impact and influence. Maps drawn especially for this volume, a pronunciation glossary, and extensive notes and summaries of each book make this an Odyssey that will be treasured by a new generation of readers.
Emily Wilson is a professor of classical studies at the University of Pennsylvania.
本是写作课作业,但却真正的吸引了我。书中有人们对美德的追求,有mortals和immortals的共处,有闪耀的古希腊文明。印象深刻。
评分Excellent translation! I went to her talk at Yale. Such a sharp and attentive scholar. When she read out aloud her own translation--Penelope's dream and the massacre of the suitors, I was enamored by her words. She genuinely loves Homer and her passion for this literature just exuberated in the lecture hall. Energy overflows in her translation!
评分翻译很平易近人,语言非常现代,读起来语言上不会有很大障碍,但是这样也会在翻译中失去一些该严肃艰涩的地方…?
评分非常友好的阅读体验,作者引言里关于古希腊待客传统的章节值得关注,这对故事有很好的背景提示作用。
评分韵律感极好,画面感很强,有好几幕非常喜欢,bloodshed 一章反复读了好几遍,太爽快。写Penelope,”She offers hope to all, sends signs to each, but all the while her mind moves somewhere all” 她隐忍聪明坚定也神秘,然她最大的价值仍在她的sexual fidelity. 写Odysseus,他勇敢聪慧强大,却也说出 “when the gods bring misery and pain, we have to bear our suffering with calm.”
