这本书比《博物馆与知识形塑》容易读多了。两个有用的概念meaning-making和post-museum。现代主义博物馆忽略观众，只是把客观真实的知识传输给他们；后博物馆则是一个让观众学习的场所，观众根据需要自己主动地构建知识。 物质文化主要是三维的实物，视觉文化则是二维的（电影，照片）。博物馆藏品是物质文化研究，博物馆展览和信息传播是视觉文化研究。
