對比於Roald的其他作品，本書沒有天馬行空的幻想，但多瞭父愛的溫馨，捕魚、放風箏、下藥每個小故事都趣味盎然。另外Roald似乎有些仇富心理，他筆下的富人，好的不多。。。此外學校那段似乎也與整體故事聯係不大。
