When Sabrina disappears, an airman in the U.S. Air Force is drawn into a web of suppositions, wild theories, and outright lies. He reports to work every night in a bare, sterile fortress that serves as no protection from a situation that threatens the sanity of Teddy, his childhood friend and the boyfriend of the missing woman. Sabrina’s grieving sister, Sandra, struggles to fill her days as she waits in purgatory. 很棒，不愧是第一本进入布克奖长名单的图像小说。拟像Simulacra的另一个极端结果，是对媒体和政府疑神疑鬼的大众和无处释放的愤怒与恐惧，Albert Douglas这个阴谋理论的热衷推广人很可能是PTSD战后神经患者，通过收音机散播Apocalypse即将到来的末日预言，9.11、校园屠杀、Sabrina被害被臆想成政府阴谋（受害者其实没死，都在一个与世隔绝的atoll上幸福地生活），本应被同情的受害人亲友却受到指责甚至收到死亡威胁。最后Connor有关Calvin新工作的笑话又给文本理解带来另一种近乎戏谑的诠释可能……这不是悬疑惊险作品，而是有关媒体对人们的复杂影响以及后现代语境下如何处理真实的缺席的（在这种缺席中如何保持对自我身份认知和如何给予他者宽容）。
