《The Old Man and the Sea老人與海（英文插圖原版）》講述瞭一個發生在二十世紀中葉古巴的故事。主人公是一位聖地亞哥的老漁夫。這位風燭殘年的漁夫一連八十四天都沒有釣到一條魚，幾乎都快餓死瞭；但他仍然不肯認輸，而充滿著奮鬥的精神，終於在第八十五天釣到一條大馬林魚。大魚拖著船往大海走，但老人依然死拉著不放，即使沒有水，沒有食物，沒有武器，沒有幫手，而且左手又抽筋，他也絲毫不灰心。經過兩天兩夜之後，他終於殺死大魚，把它拴在船邊。但許多鯊魚立刻前來搶奪他的戰利品；他一一地殺死它們，到最後隻剩下一支摺斷的舵柄作為武器。結果，大魚仍難逃被吃光的命運，最終，老人精疲力竭地拖迴一副魚骨。他迴到傢躺在床上，隻好從夢中去尋迴那往日美好的歲月，以忘卻殘酷的現實。

厄尼斯特·米勒爾·海明威（Ernest Miller Hemingway，1899年7月21日—1961年7月2日），美國作傢和記者，被認為是20世紀著名的小說傢之一。海明威一嚮以文壇硬漢著稱，他是美利堅民族的精神豐碑。海明威的作品標誌著他獨特創作風格的形成，在美國文學史乃至世界文學史上都占有重要地位。《老人與海》是海明威著名的作品之一，它奠定瞭海明威在世界文學中的突齣地位。
