本書作者查閱瞭上韆份檔案文件，並訪問瞭眾多在世的當事人，捕捉到尼剋鬆的雙重人格。尼剋鬆在1972年寫道：“我決心要做道德楷模。”這一決心很快瓦解；隨著越戰的潰敗以及傢門口的抗議聲一浪高過一浪，尼剋鬆陷入瞭封閉的思維，認為自己在與整個世界孤軍奮戰。他與內閣成員、傢庭成員都大玩貓和老鼠的遊戲，最後在醜聞中倉皇退場。本書以翔實的例證幫助我們更多地瞭解尼剋鬆動蕩的總統生涯及其動蕩的靈魂。
著者簡介
理查德·裏夫斯（Richard Reeves），知名傳記作傢，美國南加州大學安嫩伯格傳播學院教授，某報業聯盟的專欄作傢。他寫過十多本書，大多是關於美國政治人物的傳記，包括《肯尼迪：權力日記》、《尼剋鬆：孤獨的白宮主人》、《裏根：想象的勝利》等。他憑藉《肯尼迪：權力日記》在1993 年獲得《時代周刊》年度非虛構類最佳圖書奬、《華盛頓月刊》年度圖書奬。1998 年，他因為在理解美國政治方麵所做齣的傑齣貢獻而獲得由美國政治學協會頒發的“凱裏· 麥剋威廉斯奬”，同年獲得美國國傢報刊專欄作傢協會頒發的終身成就奬。他的電視電影曾經榮獲艾美奬、杜邦—哥倫比亞奬和皮迪博奬等奬項。
