评分很多观点受质疑，但是hofstadter的著作最吸引人的是他对历史的综合分析和洞察力，书中多处提出了精彩的论断，其中不少在学术史上是具有挑战性的，比如地位革命说。方法上，让人诟病颇多但同时也颇为精彩的就是hofstadter对社会科学方法——尤其是社会心理学——的应用。
