Douglas Richard Hofstadter，1945—

又名侯道仁，美國當代著名學者、認知科學傢。侯世達生於學術世傢，其父羅伯特·霍夫施塔特（Robert Hofstadter）是1961年諾貝爾物理學奬得主。其父在斯坦福大學任教，侯世達在斯坦福大學長大，並於1965年畢業於該校數學係。1975年因發現瞭侯世達蝴蝶（Hofstadter butterfly.）取得俄勒岡大學物理學博士學位。1977 年加入美國印第安納大學計算機科學係，80年代初他與輔導的研究生組成的“流動類比研究組”(Fluid Analogies Research Group, FARG) ，嘗試為人類心智過程建模，開發有Jumbo、Seek-Whence、Copycat、Tabletop、Numbo、Metacat、Phaeaco、Letter Spirit、SeqSee、George、Musicat等模型。1984年受聘於密歇根大學，任心理學教授，兼任沃爾格林人類理智研究中心的主席（Walgreen Chair for the Study of Human Understanding）。1988年迴到印第安納大學，任文理學院教授，以認知科學和計算機科學研究為主，同時兼任科學史和科學哲學、哲學、比較文學副教授職務。

2009年被選為美國文理科學院院士，並成為美國哲學會會員。

2010年被選為瑞典皇傢學院院士。

侯世達教授對不同語言著迷，除瞭母語英語外，可以流利的說法語與意大利語，對德語、俄語、西班牙語、瑞典語、中文、荷蘭語等語言也有瞭解。

1979年齣版《哥德爾、艾捨爾、巴赫——集異璧之大成》（Gödel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid），次年獲得普利策奬（非虛構類）與美國國傢圖書奬（科學類），全書通過對哥德爾的數理邏輯、艾捨爾的版畫和巴赫的音樂三者的綜閤闡述， 探討瞭人類思維的層次、規律與應用，因其橫跨多個領域，內容深刻被譽為心智議題跨學科第一奇書。。

1995年齣版《流體概念和創意類比：思想基本機製的計算機模型》（Fluid Concepts & Creative Analogies: Computer Models of the Fundamental Mechanisms of Thought）與幾位他的研究生閤著，是有史以來第一本在亞馬遜齣售的圖書。

1995年齣版Le Ton beau de Marot: In Praise of the Music of Language 一書討論語言與翻譯，尤其是詩歌翻譯。

1999年，普希金誕辰200周年之際，翻譯齣版詩體小說《歐根·奧涅金》

2007年齣版第一部帶有自傳色彩作品《我是個怪圈》，繼續探討《哥德爾，埃捨爾，巴赫》的中心議題：什麼是人類的“自我”。他嚮我們展示自我指涉係統——在哥德爾不完備定理中得到瞭尤其充分的說明——是如何刻畫瞭我們的心智。本書獲得當年《洛杉磯時報》科學寫作圖書奬。

2013年與法國心理學傢Emmanuel Sander閤著《錶象與本質：作為思維燃料的類比》（Surfaces and Essences: Analogy as the Fuel and Fire of Thinking）。
