评分前半部比後半部好，追憶比現實寫得好。
评分從含蓄瑣碎的敘述中，可以看齣主人公齣身貧寒，傢庭不幸，從小膽怯敏感，與妻子的感情十分深厚。他藉迴憶和遠居逃避喪妻之痛，繁密描寫童年和所見所感，讓人覺得他的注意力就那樣固執地停滯在無謂的事情上，寫Miss V、Colonel甚至Bun的部分讓我覺得不耐煩，就像他自己說的，too self-absorbed。可就在最後那一小部分中，稍微發生瞭一點事，纔讓我恍悟之前並非冗筆。沙灘、少女、癡迷和對男人的諷刺，確實有點像納博科夫。這本書像一本療傷之作，讀者聽主人公傾訴，陪他恍神，逐漸瞭解他的生活，最後目送他迴到他不情願去的現實中去。
