从含蓄琐碎的叙述中，可以看出主人公出身贫寒，家庭不幸，从小胆怯敏感，与妻子的感情十分深厚。他借回忆和远居逃避丧妻之痛，繁密描写童年和所见所感，让人觉得他的注意力就那样固执地停滞在无谓的事情上，写Miss V、Colonel甚至Bun的部分让我觉得不耐烦，就像他自己说的，too self-absorbed。可就在最后那一小部分中，稍微发生了一点事，才让我恍悟之前并非冗笔。沙滩、少女、痴迷和对男人的讽刺，确实有点像纳博科夫。这本书像一本疗伤之作，读者听主人公倾诉，陪他恍神，逐渐了解他的生活，最后目送他回到他不情愿去的现实中去。
