The love story ends like a ghost story. The ailing Zeena ejected Mattie on the pretext that someone handier than her would be helpful in doing housework. Frome made a clean breast of his affection for her en route to the station. The two merrymakers sledding down the slopes expecting nothing untoward were only to be commiserated instead of blessed.
