RUTH BENEDICT (1887-1948) was one of the twentieth century's foremost anthropologists and helped to shape the discipline in the United States and around the world. Benedict was a student and later a colleague of Franz Boas at Columbia, where she taught from 1924. Margaret Mead was one of her students. Benedict's contributions to the field of cultural anthropology are often cited today.

從寫作背景和預期的效用來講不清楚是否能冠以偉大之名但必然是一部經典在戰後七十多年纔閱讀自然需要帶著曆史局限性的鑒彆意識然而作為西方人能對日本做齣如此細緻到巔毫的解讀著實堪比愚公移山之功即便在鄰國中國也鮮有見到類似相近的作品 // 必須提一下這位十九世紀齣生的作者語言功力尤其是擺弄超長句的功力十分瞭得小生大把時間在思考如何斷句主語是啥這句到底是肯定還是否定單詞相比倒是小問題瞭

Written by a literature author. The structure and lexicon of these sentences are kind of hard to understand. But after you read through it, you will have a great lift on the ability to analyze the complex sentences. Concerning to the book itself, it talks about how Japanese grow into such an exotic conduct of life and strange behaviors.

想到自己讀到人類學的研究生纔第一次讀這本書，不免有一種又慚愧又慶幸的感覺。慚愧的是自己的拖延癥，慶幸的是現在至少可以從各種不同的視角來讀瞭（i.e., situated knowledge/semiotics/poststructuralist...etc.）

要束縛不要舒服的民族。最終撿起來看的原因是廣告狂人裏跟日本人做生意，頭天晚上Don在傢讀這本書。1944年寫這本書是因為戰爭，Mad Men是為瞭商業戰爭。美國人不太在乎曆史，倒是喜歡把現在的功課做足，實用主義，分析權衡，遊走投機
