對於一個“民族”而言，其行為和思考方法之間是否存在係統性的內在聯係？是否存在一種能夠將行為與思考方法容納其中的的整體結構？對這兩個問題的肯定迴答是本書研究的前提，也是大多數批評著眼之處。對習慣於各自視角的日本研究專傢看來，書中提齣的很多矛盾或可得到曆史的、經濟的、社會的甚至宗教的解釋，唯獨與“民族”關係不大，更不能用幾個大而不當的文化patterns來概括。但在我看來，等級製、報恩、名譽、人情等固然是作者為瞭將諸多矛盾的原理實踐連起來所添加的輔助綫，也的確把一些無關的點給連瞭進來。但絕非”沒有學術貢獻“。相反，在文化這一尺度上分辨差異，既是瞭解他者的必要步驟，也包含瞭比較研究某種根本性的意旨，更不用說反常規的輔助綫往往會激發新的學術想象。PS：閱讀英文版可以更容易地帶入嚴肅的文化研究者的角色
